Wellington Phoenix have announced the surprise signing of teenage goalkeeper Harry Longden, a highly-rated prospect from Christchurch, ahead of the 2025/26 A-League Men season.

The 17-year-old, who has impressed at youth level with a string of commanding performances, will now link up with the Phoenix first team in Wellington.

Head coach Giancarlo Italiano described Longden as a player with “huge upside and hunger to learn.” “Harry has the foundations of a top goalkeeper – strong reflexes, excellent distribution, and the confidence to command his box. For us, it’s about developing him in a professional environment and preparing him for the challenges of the A-League,” Italiano said.

Longden said the move is a dream come true: “I’ve supported the Phoenix since I was young. To now put on the yellow and black is surreal. I want to work hard, learn from the experienced guys around me, and show fans what I can do.”

The 1.87m shot-stopper is expected to start the season as an understudy but could see game time later in the campaign, depending on injuries and form.
